The Chevrolet Cobalt SS comprises three sport compact versions of the Chevrolet Cobalt that were built on the General Motors Delta platform at Lordstown Assembly in Ohio, United States. The three versions included two forced induction inline-four Ecotec engines and a third naturally aspirated engine that was later called the Cobalt Sport. SS is an abbreviation of Super Sport, a historic moniker used by Chevrolet to denote high performance upgrades that meet certain criteria.

The Cobalt SS was GM's first foray into the tuner market, launching as a 205 hp (153 kW; 208 PS) supercharged 2.0 L coupe in late 2004, paired only with the F35 5-speed manual transmission of Opel. The following year, a naturally aspirated 1SS model equipped with GM's new 2.4 L 171 hp (128 kW; 173 PS) engine was added in both coupe and sedan body styles, including automatic and manual transmission options. Production of the supercharged coupe continued until 2007, and after a brief hiatus the SS relaunched in the second quarter of 2008 with a more efficient and powerful turbocharged 2.0 L engine producing 260 hp (194 kW; 264 PS) before all Cobalt production ended in 2010. (See timeline).

The Cobalt SS received generally positive reviews, particularly the turbocharged and supercharged versions. In a 2013 review, journalist Patrick George called it the best compact car ever made by General Motors, and a potential "future classic".[2] At first release in 2004, the supercharged version was praised for its performance but drew criticism for its interior quality and exterior styling, both described as too reminiscent of its predecessor, the Cavalier. Reports surfaced in May 2009 that General Motors planned to eliminate the Cobalt SS as early as December 2009, but they proved to be untrue.[3] [4] Production continued but ordering options for late 2010 models were limited and production of all Cobalts ended in June 2009. The car was replaced by the Cruze,[5] but a high performance version comparable to the Cobalt SS was never built and the Cruze ended production for the North American market in 2019.[6]

Model details [edit]

Overview [edit]

General Motors used five different inline-four engines in the Cobalt over the course of production, and designated three as SS models. The first was launched in 2004 as a 2005 model with a new powertrain that had debuted one year earlier on the Saturn ION Red Line. It was available as a Supercharged coupe only. The naturally aspirated 2.4 L LE5 engine was the next SS to launch in late 2005 as a 2006 model, available as both a coupe and sedan for the duration of its run.[7] [8] However, in late 2007, at the same time the announcement cancelling the SS Supercharged was made, GM also announced that the 2.4 L would be renamed "Cobalt Sport", rendering Chevrolet without a Cobalt SS for the first half of the 2008 model year. The 2.0 L LNF turbocharged Cobalt was the last to launch in the second quarter of 2008. It was initially available only as a coupe until a sedan option was offered for the 2009 model year but again deleted for 2010 after less than 500 were produced.[9]

All three models of the Cobalt SS feature four wheel, anti-lock disc brakes. Compared to the base Cobalt, the SS has lower front and rear fascias for a more aggressive look with integrated fog lights, side rocker moldings, interior accents, and a chrome exhaust tip. Exclusive to the 2.0 L Cobalt are a titanium‑faced sport analogue cluster with a 160 mph (260 km/h in Canada) speedometer, an A‑pillar mounted boost gauge, reclining front bucket seats with two‑tone leather‑appointed seating surfaces, vertical adjusting head restraints and driver‑side lumbar and height adjusters, and a sport‑tuned FE5 suspension with a 24 mm front stabilizer bar and 22 mm rear stabilizer bar.[7]

SS Supercharged [edit]

A two-door car being driven.

Available as a coupe only, the SS Supercharged featured the 2.0 L LSJ Ecotec engine with an Eaton M62 Roots type supercharger and air‑to‑liquid intercooler.[10] The engine makes 205 hp (153 kW) at 5600 rpm and 200 lb⋅ft (271 N⋅m) at 4,400 rpm.[7] 18‑inch broad spoke wheels with P215/45R18 summer Pirelli tires were standard. Optional for the LSJ was a performance package coded G85 that added Recaro bucket seats and a limited slip differential (LSD). LSD was optional for 2005 models (performance package came with LSD) and was standard in models from 2007 to 2010. The G85 option continued in the LNF Cobalt, but added only the LSD. The car became notable for a high‑profile spoiler that was standard in 2005, but optional from 2008 when a lower profile spoiler used on all other Cobalt coupes became an option.[11]

GM offered dealer-installed performance upgrade packages called "stage kits" that were covered by factory warranty.[12] The Stage 1 kit consists of new fuel injectors and a reprogram of the ECU, and yields up to a 30 hp (22 kW) improvement. The Stage 2 kit consists of new fuel injectors and the same reprogram with a smaller serpentine belt and pulley for the supercharger, producing a 36 hp (27 kW) improvement and 18 lb⋅ft (24 N⋅m) of torque. Both stage 1 and 2 kits increase the engine redline to 7,000 rpm.[12] The Stage 3 kit consists of a smaller, 76 mm (3.0 in) supercharger pulley, a 2‑pass intercooler end plate and a customizable replacement ECU. The Stage 3 ECU allows for the use of a 50‑shot of nitrous, 100 octane fuel and an adjustable redline from 6,750 to 8,000 rpm. Stage 3 produces 248 hp (185 kW) using 93 octane fuel, up 260 hp (194 kW) using 100 octane fuel, and much higher power with nitrous. Stage 3 is for track use only, and to emphasize this, air conditioning is disabled with the Stage 3 ECU.[12]

Wheel hop, wheelspin, and a general lack of traction were problems frequently encountered with the supercharged Cobalt due to its front drive setup and relatively high torque. Upgraded front and rear trans and motor mounts would help to alleviate these issues.[13] The GM Performance Division later tried to rectify these problems in the turbocharged car by providing wider, stickier tires and stronger axles.[14]

SS Turbocharged [edit]

The LSJ engine did not meet emissions requirements for the 2008 model year, and General Motors' contract with Eaton had expired.[8] [15] The non-supercharged 2.4 L Cobalt SS also lost its Super Sport designation for the 2008 model year and was renamed "Sport", leaving no SS in production. However, in fall 2007, a more powerful Cobalt SS was announced for the second quarter of 2008.[16] It would be equipped with the 2.0 L, turbocharged, direct injected, VVT, LNF Ecotec engine, making 260 hp (194 kW) at 5300 rpm and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) at 2,000 rpm, remaining mated to the F35 5-speed manual transmission.[17] The engine had been introduced in a rear wheel drive application for the 2007 GM Kappa platform, which includes the Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice, and Opel GT.[18]

Also new for the 2008 SS were SS-embroidered sport seats with suede-like UltraLux inserts, several new exterior colors, and wider 18-inch (460 mm) forged, split-spoke wheels with P225/40R18 Continental AG tires, styled similarly to those offered for the Chevrolet Corvette C6.[14] The car's electronics were also new, and along with greater assist in poor traction conditions, a "no-lift-shift" feature was added which allows the driver to maintain turbocharger boost during shifts to a higher gear. During a no‑lift‑shift, the driver begins the shift normally by depressing the clutch, but the accelerator pedal is held wide open while the shift is completed.[14] Also new was "launch control", which feathers the throttle at roughly 4,800 rpm until engagement of the clutch, allowing more consistent launches in competitive situations. To activate launch control, the driver presses twice on the traction control button which first turns off traction control, and then notifies the driver through the Driver's Information Center that Competitive Mode is active and launch control is ready for use. Turbocharged Cobalt owners have found that better times can be achieved while racing when the car is manually launched.[ citation needed ] These features help propel the car from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.5 seconds, and a quarter mile time of 13.9 seconds at 102.5 mph (165.0 km/h).[19]

New for 2009 was the aforementioned four-door sedan option, as well as an optional "reconfigurable performance display" (RPD) for the coupe only.[20] The $295 option replaced the boost gauge in the A‑pillar, and allows the driver to manipulate traction control, stability control, "shift points", and the engagement of Competition Mode, as well as information regarding the car's engine torque and horsepower, g‑force, boost, wideband air fuel ratio, barometric pressure, temperature, and battery voltage.[20] For 2010, the RPD and a power sunroof were standard. The red/ebony and grey/ebony interior color options were also dropped, as was the turbocharged sedan.[21]

A stage 1 kit which raises power to 290 hp (216 kW) and 340 lb⋅ft (461 N⋅m) was made available in October 2009 after several delays. The kit can be installed by the owner of the car, but final alteration of the vehicle's engine control unit must take place at a GM dealer.[12]

SS Naturally aspirated [edit]

Chevrolet introduced a naturally aspirated Cobalt SS in the fall of 2005 as a 2006 model, available as both a coupe and sedan. It featured the 2.4 LE5 engine with variable valve timing, making 171 hp (128 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 163 lb⋅ft (221 N⋅m) at 5,000 rpm, later upped to 167 lb⋅ft (226 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm. The LE5 engine was paired with a 5-speed manual (or optionally the 4T45 4‑speed automatic) for 2006 and was introduced on both the FWD Delta platform and RWD Kappa platform. For the 2006 and 2007 model years the car was called SS, or "1SS", but was replaced with the moniker "Cobalt Sport" for 2008 with the anticipated introduction of the turbocharged SS; it is the Getrag F23 transmission with different ratios from the F35 in the forced induction cars, and is the same transmission that Chevrolet mated to the 2.2 L L61 engine in the Cobalt LS and LT.[7]

Other changes over the supercharged car are notable but not drastic; 17‑inch broad spoke wheels with narrower P205/50R17 all‑season Pirelli tires were standard, as was the low profile spoiler. 2.4 L and 2.2 L Sport Package Cobalts have a 140 mph (220 km/h in Canada) speedometer with optional white face gauges. The car rides on the FE3 suspension, superior and more sport‑tuned to that of base Cobalts but less refined than the FE5 on the supercharged and turbocharged cars. Brakes on the 2.4  L naturally aspirated and supercharged model are identical, but the turbocharged model received an upgraded Brembo braking system.[7] The front and rear bumpers are the same, but the front lacks a lip accessory and the bottom of the rear fascia is slightly different.[7] With the exception of exterior styling and some interior trims, the vehicle is identical to the Pontiac G5 GT.[22]

Reception [edit]

A two-door car.

Supercharged coupe in sport red tint coat, an extra cost paint option that became available in 2007

Reviews of the supercharged Cobalt SS were generally positive. While the Cavalier received very negative reviews,[13] the supercharged Cobalt was seen as an improvement, and a worthy first entry for GM into the tuner market. However, the general fit and finish was poor, and power levels were not up to par with other competitors. Journalist Thom Blackett said, "When compared with more contemporary cars including the Dodge Neon SRT-4 and the Subaru WRX, that SS badge seems to lose some of its luster."[23] The F35 transmission has also been deemed inferior to that in the newest of generation of Honda's Civic Si.[14] Critics also disliked the heavy wheels which negatively affected handling, as well as the spoiler which obstructed rearward visibility. Speaking of the high‑profile aero wing, automotive journalist Alexandra Straub said, "the deck-lid spoiler was directly in my line-of-sight when looking out of the rearview mirror. It's almost like it cut everything in half."[24] In his review of a later model, John Neff of Autoblog called the wing "obnoxious".[25] Some Cobalt SS owners have traded spoilers with lower trim owners to obtain a less aggressive look, or traded the entire trunklid with Cobalt LS owners, for whom a rear spoiler is merely optional.[7] The naturally aspirated Cobalt SS has been seen as an improvement over the base models with its slightly more potent 2.4 L engine,[8] but notably inferior to the supercharged car.[26]

Combined with the flexible engine, and especially considering the price, this is a really fine effort, a good package for a front-drive car. Much more refined than the Shelby GT500KR.[27]

Randy Pobst on the Cobalt SS Turbocharged

The powertrain of the 2008 turbocharged Cobalt SS received rave reviews. John Neff of Autoblog said, "The GM Performance Division completely reworked the Cobalt SS for 2008, swapping in a more powerful turbocharged engine, upgrading the rest of the mechanicals, and tweaking the entire package on the world's most demanding race tracks, including the famed Nürburgring in Germany. The result is – and we're not kidding here – the most impressive performance car to wear a bow-tie badge on sale today." Journalists were impressed with the performance of the car in relation to the price; Neff added that the "2009 Cobalt SS Turbo is freakishly good at going fast and the best bang for the buck value below $30,000."[25] Ron Kiino of Motor Trend said, "at only $22,995, the SS could stand for Super Steal."[19] The MSRP was raised to $24,095 for the 2009 model year.

The Nürburgring‑tuned suspension gives the Cobalt SS some of the best handling characteristics of any General Motors front wheel drive vehicle,[15] and the suspension is stiffer and more refined than the supercharged car. Since the interior is hardly changed other than the seats, those criticisms remain. Of the interior in the turbocharged sedan, Car and Driver said it "is constructed primarily of plastics cheap enough to be rejected from a Chinese toy factory; the Tata Nano probably has a fancier parking-brake lever."[28] The new Cobalt was the winner in its price class (under $30,000) of Car and Driver's 2008 Lightning Lap competition at Virginia International Raceway, beating lap times of several cars in the $30,000-$60,000 class including the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.[29] It held the front-wheel drive record until it was surpassed by the Honda Civic Type R in 2018.[30] Four Chevrolet Cobalt SS cars were used in the Continental Challenge Street Tuner class in 2009.[31]

Ford Mustang review – V8 GT, EcoBoost and Bullitt driven

Flawed, fun and fast - Mustang's not a great sports car, but it's a great muscle car

10 Dec 2020

The Ford Mustang is a car that's intrinsically tied with the United States of America; one whose image is just as associated with the Americanisms of liberty, prosperity and space to roam free as the bald eagle or the right to bear military-grade firearms. While democracy and capitalism are certainly things we share with the USA, the UK is a very different country making cross-pollination a sometimes jarring affair – McDonalds in tudor buildings for example – so how does the Mustang sit in our decidedly smaller and more sophisticated landscape?

To start, Ford started by making the latest Mustang marketable in international markets, introducing a new generation in 2015 with the steering wheel on the right hand side for the first time in its extensive history. Ford's even taken some notes out of the European cloth, offering a sophisticated turbocharged four-cylinder engine option and a technically sophisticated ten-speed automatic transmission.

> 749bhp Shelby GT500 confirmed as most powerful street-legal Ford

It's a car with unanimous appeal to those around you too, with a thundering soundtrack and a real sense of fun whether you're on the daily commute or driving briskly, not to mention aesthetics that could only be penned on the western side of the Atlantic ocean.

More reviews

If you live across the pond, then you're liable to be tempted even further with the the Shelby GT350R and GT500. Their 5.2-litre flat-plane crank V8 (the latter supercharged) and more focused chassis helps transform the Mustang into a far more serious road and track car. It requires commitment when driving fast, but is an incredibly engaging and truly unique driving experience.

Ford Mustang in detail

  • > Performance and 0-60 time - The Mustang GT is the UK's best performer, dispatching 0-62mph in just 4.3sec despite a lardy 1818kg kerb weight
  • > Engine and gearbox - The 5.0 V8 is thirsty, but brilliant at embracing the muscle car vibe, whereas the 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbocharged variant doesn't provide the performance, fuel economy or soul needed to upstage its bigger brother.
  • > Ride and handling - Despite finally adopting an independent rear suspension set-up, the Mustang still resolutely adheres to its American heritage by lacking resolved body control and feedback from the front wheels to thrill on European roads.
  • > MPG and running costs - Low running costs were never going to be the Mustang's strong point, but they are at least trying with the EcoBoost model. Comparative fuel and tax bills might make that BMW 430i look a little more enticing though.
  • > Interior and tech - Unlike Mustangs of old, the interior is not the plasticky affair you might expect, although it still doesn't get close to German and Japanese rivals. Ford's excellent SYNC 3 infotainment system does make a welcome appearance though.
  • > Design - Ford didn't hold back on the design of the Mustang, appealing to its retro heritage, while still appearing contemporary. In a sea of BMW 4-series and Audi A5s the Mustang will definitely get you noticed.

Prices, specs and rivals

£39,420 is enough for the entry-level 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost, with the the 5-litre V8 GT next up the ladder at £43,685. Above this is the Bullitt, which amongst unique styling touches also features a few of the GT's optional upgrades for £49,085.

Unlike almost all of its rivals, a manual gearbox is standard, with an automatic transmission available for an additional £2000 on the V8 – rather oddly, both the Ecoboost or Bullitt became manual-only in 2020. Convertible versions of the Ecoboost and GT are also available for a further £3500.

Cylinder count, swept capacity and performance aside, the differences between the 2.3 and 5.0 aren't major. As standard the EcoBoost car comes well equipped, benefiting from a limited-slip differential, LED headlights and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatibility. To rein in the V8's extra grunt it gets more powerful Brembo brakes, and there are line-lock/launch control functions, too.

While the Ford Mustang might not have any direct rivals that combine a V8 at less than £45,000, for the now rare experience of a naturally aspirated V8 four-seater coupe one needs to turn to Lexus, whose RC-F is a riot of brilliant V8 noises and quirky Japanese design. At over £60k it is a fair jump in price, but then the differentiations in build quality are more than enough to justify the Lexus's extra cost – cue the inevitable burger in polystyrene comparison to a beautifully crafted bento box.

When it comes to more comparably priced rivals, the Mustang sits in a glut of £50k-ish sports cars and saloons that might not match the horsepower, but offer tempting options. Sports cars like the Alpine A110 and Toyota Supra are squat and aggressive with plenty of pedigree behind them, go more mainstream and the Audi TT RS might lack show, but has plenty of go alongside its Group B-through-a-cushion soundtrack. There's also AMG's CLA45 S which continues to constantly surprise by actually driving like it has actual dampers rather than rubber poles attached to its suspension unlike before, and that's before we finally arrive at the Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe and the beaver-nosed BMW M440i that creep up and over the £50k mark. The Ford might still have its bang-for-buck figures, but the competition is varied, talented and sophisticated at the Mustang's upper reaches.

Also pulled the 60-186MPH or time off the Johnny Bohmer top speed Ford GT test. The display is a direct link to a GPS readout and the timings are off directly related YouTube counters. There could be variances.

60-186MPH= 22 seconds plus 3 seconds 0-60MPH= 0-300km/h= 25 seconds
0-200MPH worked out exactly the same way= 35 seconds

Etc.

I saw one of these in person a few months back. Absolutely stunning, one of the coolest looking and sexiest cars to come out in the past 5 years.
It's the stance that's cool too- this thing is insanely low, lower than any current road car I can think of. It's also super wide, and the flying buttresses just make it look wider.

User avatar

hostboy2y ago

This car is not really a successor to the first gen Ford GT, it's more like a modern Jaguar XJ220 or Ferrari F40

User avatar

hostboy2y ago

Please change power figure to 660 hp.

User avatar

aaayy2y ago

Hennessey says that there is no room for a V8 in this car. I don't think so. There is clearly enough room for Hennessey to mount, say, the Predator supercharged V8. That engine's small, and it's only 5.2 liters, but it makes 113 more horsepower 75 LB-FT more torque. Besides, I'm pretty sure you could modify the bodywork to fit it in, or push the cabin in a little more forward.

this car should've been around 720-750bhp with something akin to an extreme aero pkg. i still like the car, i just dont understand why they made it so track oriented without some real downforce/aero and being the least poweful in its segment

The Ford GT is really a British car (and always has been, its roots trace back to the original GT40) and assembled in Canada. The Ford badge doesn't always make it American. This is no more American than the Chevrolet SS sedan is, and that car is completely Australian. The Ford GT is no more American than the Honda NSX is Japanese.

I think the real reason of the slow time in 1/4 mile is the large gear ratio for make 348km/h. 650S and 488 have very sort first gears and this makes better aceleration.

User avatar

Grotiare4y ago

Should this website separate the base Ford GT with the competition gt or are they too similar? Apparently that gt is 3000 lbs w/o fluids, I'm guessing it's 100 to 200 lbs lighter than base.

User avatar

hostboy4y ago

Why is the 0-170 time barely quicker than the Charger Hellcat? Look at the 150-170 gap

User avatar

hostboy4y ago

I mean there's no way this car is making LESS horsepower than the 2013 Shelby MMUUSSTTAANNGG GT500. This is a supercar from Ford, the other's a $60k ($40k used) muscle car.

User avatar

hostboy4y ago

Also the 647bhp number is just a solid conservative one, the real number won't be published until after 2018. It's most likely making SEVEN-hundred 47, or closer to that of the new Shelby GT500. Ford is keeping everything lowkey for now as they know they are competing with likes of the new Corvette ZR1 and Bugatti Chiron.

Remember when McLaren stated their F1 had 550-580 hp for one year and then they said 627? Or when Ferrari said the F40 made 478 hp but it REALLY, REALLY made closer to 550?

Ford goes drag racing with 1,400 HP electric Mustang Cobra Jet

Ford today took the wraps off an electric Mustang prototype. Called Mustang Cobra Jet 1,400, it carries Ford's long tradition of drag racing the Mustang. But for the first time, a quiet electric power plant is spinning the slicks instead of a roaring V8.

This one-off prototype is said to hit mid-eight second quarter-mile times thanks to 1,400 HP and 1,100 ft.-lbs of torque. That's on par with numbers put up by Ford's 2018 Cobra Jet equipped with a supercharged 5.2L engine.

Ford has yet to reveal any technical information about the electric Cobra Jet's motors, batteries, tires, or range.

Such prototypes are critical to Ford's electric strategy that includes producing an electric SUV under the Mustang brand. Many have criticized Ford for expanding the Mustang family to include the Mach-E electric SUV as the Mustang has always been a two-door sports car. With this electric Mustang drag racer, Ford is seemingly telling the automotive world that it sees electric motors and batteries as a viable future for the Mustang brand.

This electric Cobra Jet could be a shot across the bow of Tesla and Porsche. The original 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet is widely considered the most powerful muscle car of the era, outclassing everything from General Motors and Chrysler. Right now, in 2020, Tesla and Porsche offer the most powerful and fastest electric cars outside of electric exotics, and this prototype is seemingly telling them to check their rearview mirrors because Detroit is serious about electric cars.

The original Cobra Jet debuted in 1968 and dominated drag strips across the United States. A person could walk into a Ford dealership and leave with a vehicle capable of besting most modified Cameros, GTOs, and Road Runners. Ford revived the Cobra Jet in 2008 and has since released limited-run versions every few years. Most are not road legal. These are cars designed to do one thing: go fast in a straight line. And now, with the 1,400 HP electric Mustang Cobra Jet, it's designed to do two things: Go fast and show the world batteries can be fun, too.

2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon

2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon

Jeep. One word without any need for definition. Jeep basically invented what is today thought of as the Sport Utility Vehicle. What started off during World War II as a light troop and ammo carrier later turned into the benchmark standard of what "off-road capable" means.

With its latest Wrangler Rubicon Recon, Jeep aims to move that benchmark.

The Rubicon Recon Edition is based on the standard Wrangler Rubicon model, which is already plenty impressive, especially off-road. The Recon Edition looks to seriously up the off-road stakes with a collection of improvements.

High Standards, Low Ratios

The front axle gets strengthened tubes and heavy-duty end forgings. The cast front and rear differential covers are even more serious than before, and the Recon presents improved off-road rock rails that are shortened to accommodate up to 35-inch tires. The Recon part-time four-wheel-drive system has electronic-locking Dana 44 axles front and rear, with power being directed to each end via a Rock-Trac transfer case.

The "4-Low" ratio comes off as 4:1, and there's a 4.10 front and rear axle ratio that comes standard along with Tru-Lok locking differentials. The Rubicon Recon Edition has a crawl ratio of 73.1:1 that would get you outrun by a toddler on the flats but allows you to out-climb a mountain goat on the rocky stuff.

JP017 016WR61t2i7cls0dlnuiu15lu1a2jon
"With an array of beefed up off-road components, the new Rubicon Recon provides even more legendary Jeep Wrangler capability," said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global. "With unmatched capability and a unique appearance, Rubicon Recon is the perfect Wrangler for our most loyal, diehard off-road enthusiasts who love to tackle the most demanding trails." Photo: FCA US LLC.

Exterior Touches

The Recon Edition stands out from other Wrangler Rubicons. It rides higher thanks to a half-inch lift, there's new 17-inch Low Gloss Granite Crystal-painted aluminum wheels with 32-inch BF Goodrich KM off-road tires, optional body-color fender flares (which might violate Jeep dogma to some), and a dual-vented Power Dome hood with a black-silhouette "Rubicon" decal for a dash of style.

The iconic seven-slot grille is a Low Gloss Black affair with Low Gloss Granite Crystal inserts and headlamp rings. Low Gloss is also the watchword for the black off-road bumpers and Jeep badge with a red base. Jeep says this gives the Wrangler Rubicon Recon a "toughened exterior look."

The steel (like it would be any other material?) front bumper features a design that allows for the easy installation of a winch, and the end caps are removable so you can scramble over obstacles without any snags or damage on the trail. Red tow hooks front and rear also provide the Recon model with more protection – the red color separates it from the rest of the Wrangler herd.

The Wrangler Rubicon Recon Edition comes in seven colors: Black, Bright White, Billet Silver, Firecracker Red, Gobi, Rhino, and Granite Crystal. I know Gobi, Rhino, and Granite Crystal sound like pals of Wolverine, Jean Gray, and Dr. Xavier, but just go with it.

The Impossible Road Trip

A Premium Sunrider soft top is standard and a body-colored hard top is also offered.

JP017 017WRmu6png9nqjpeiu04ej6e5oe6p4
Wrangler continues its body-on-frame design, front and rear five-link suspension setup, live axles, and electronic lockers. It's also one of the few mid-size SUVs to offer a six-speed manual transmission, in addition to its five-speed automatic. To meet consumer demand around the world, all Jeep models sold outside North America are available in both left and right-hand drive configurations and with gasoline and diesel powertrain options. Photo: FCA US LLC.

Interior Treatments

On the inside, things are a little less Spartan than days past. The Wrangler Rubicon Recon has a standard eight-speaker audio system and black leather heated seats with "Rubicon" embroidery. The steering wheel is leather-wrapped with red accent stitching, making things a little more classy. The front door armrest is black vinyl-wrapped and the console lid has black stitching.

Red accent netting on the front and rear door pockets, center console, and seatbelts differentiate the Rubicon Recon from the rest of the Wrangler roster (he alliterated repeatedly).

There's a dashboard plaque with info concerning the front and rear axles, front sway bar, transfer case, and tires. On the dash there's a gauge cluster unique to the Recon that contains an Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with added read-outs for oil pressure, transmission and coolant temperatures, digital speed, and individual tire pressure. You can see where that tire pressure gizmo could come in real handy out on the trail.

Passenger grab handles (a necessity) feature Midnight Star Black accents that are also found throughout the cabin, on the vent rings, steering wheel spokes, and door pulls. All-weather slush mats with red accent "Jeep" logos are both a nice styling touch and practical addition. The axle locker and sway-bar disconnect switches are also red-accented. Finally, Jeep's Connectivity Group, Power Convenience Group, Satellite Radio, remote starter, and auto temperature controls are standard.

Cost? That will run you anywhere from $39,145 MSRP for the two-door model up to $42,945 MSRP for the Wrangler Unlimited model. The new 2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon Edition arrives in showrooms later this month.

Tony Borroz has spent his entire life racing antique and sports cars. He means well, even if he has a bias towards lighter, agile cars rather than big engine muscle cars or family sedans.
